Heting Barbecue: A Fusion of History and Modernity

Jianning Wang's Award-Winning Design Breathes Life into Jinan's Culinary Scene

Located on the third floor of a commercial building, Heting Barbecue spans a total of 360 square meters. The restaurant serves multiple functions, including a barbecue, izakaya, music restaurant, and bar. The project, which commenced in December 2018 and concluded in December 2019, is a product of meticulous planning and execution.

The design inspiration for Heting Barbecue stems from Jinan's historical roots. The city's ancient city wall, a relic from the Ming dynasty, stands across the road from the restaurant, providing a tangible connection to the past. Wang's design encapsulates this historical memory, cultural heritage, and the city's modern prospects, creating a unique spatial pattern within a limited scope.

The interior of Heting Barbecue is a testament to Wang's innovative design approach. The use of architectural design to arrange the interior space allows diners to experience art in every corner of the restaurant. The central dining area features a dislocated background wall that forms a three-dimensional backdrop under lighting, contrasting different material surfaces and enhancing the richness of the space.

Wang's design employs wood, stone, light, and shadow to evoke both actual and imaginary perceptions between objects and people, and between people and space. This design choice encourages guests to recall history and experience art from space, witnessing Jinan City's modernity and future. The integration of cherry blossom, sand and stone, and wooden fence elements highlight the exquisite Japanese style and bring people the artistic conception of Jinan.

Despite the challenges faced during the construction process, including the absence of a direct light source and the use of original decorative materials like old green brick, Wang and his team managed to overcome these obstacles. Through multiple light source debugging and experiments with material size and surface treatment, they achieved an ideal warm scene effect and a beautiful representation of old Jinan.
